NEC’s Tegra 2-Powered 7-Inch UMPC

January 12, 2011 by HS in Other, Video with No Comments.

While falling slightly on the periphery of what we usually blog about here at MP4 Nation, this NEC 7-inch prototype was just too interesting to pass up. It's powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 2 A9-based SoC, runs on Android 2.2, weighs in at approximately 1.3lbs and we're not sure if it will ever go on sale or is just meant as a single prototype run. Also, it's 7-inch display is also a touchpanel, meaning you won't need to use a mouse or keyboard to navigate through Android. See a video below captured by Charbax of ARMDevices at CES is an interesting watch. via liliputing

OCOSMOS OCS1 UMPC Coming In Spring

December 1, 2010 by HS in Tablet with 2 Comments.

You all remember this awesome-looking UMPC, don't you? It's got some very impressive specs, not least of which is the Intel Oaktrail-based platform that drives this 5-inch UMPC. It's screen resolution is 1024x600 - high enough to seem slightly redundant on the small 5-inch capacitive touchscreen but in today's world, more is better. The UMPC will run on Windows 7, making it one of the smallest Windows 7 MIDs / tablets to hit the market, with, of course, the exception of the Saycool M5A which is likely leagues away from what the OCS1 can be. Of course, we can't foget about the full sliding QWERTY keyboard which will speed up typing considerably, making this device a viable option for business power-users who need the flexibility of the Windows 7 platform. The internal SSD should also ke

U91 UMPC A 7-Incher Running Windows

November 2, 2010 by HS in Tablet with No Comments.

Windows-based tablets/MIDs/UMPCs/whatever-you-want-to-call-thems are not plentifully abound - certainly not in such mountainous quantities as are comparable Android devices. The U91 UMPC is a proponent on the movement against that trend - it's powered by the Intel Atom N270 processor, has a 7-inch WVGA 2-point multitouch screen, comes with WiFi, GPS (optional 3G), SD card expansion, two cameras, a trackpad and - this is interesting - a VGA port. The device looks thick (image after the break), chunky when compared to the relatively slim Android counterparts, but this is no doubt due to the cooling which x86 architecture requires. The U91 will come in 16GB to 32GB flavours (both SSD) and you can choose between 1GB of RAM or 2GB (for both size variants). All in all, it looks like a very i

Video: Oaktrail MID W/ Slide-Out Keyboard

September 15, 2010 by HS in Tablet, Video with 1 Comment.

JKK has walked us through this snazzy looking new MID/UMPC from Ocosmos scheduled to be released next year based on the Oaktrail platform. It's got a 4.8-inch 1024x600 touchscreen, which is in itself impressive, as well as some great mobile gaming opportunities with side shoulder keys, WiFi, GPS, a 32GB SSD etc etc. The specs just continue to get juicier and juicier. The slide-out keyboard is, in itself, also something very cool and just the sort of thing that the MID market could use. An infusion of hard-keyboards instead of on-screen ones. Watch the video. Seriously. via jkkmobile

128GB SSD Version of Viliv N5 Incoming

August 19, 2010 by HS in Tablet with 1 Comment.

Hanwha Japan are on schedule to bring in a version of the Viliv N5 UMPC/MID that will feature within a 128GB SSD, rather than the lowly-by-comparison 32GB that comes in the standard version. You can expect this to rather negatively affect prices to the tune of what is certain to be a pretty penny. Pricing information has not yet been revealed but don't expect this "upgrade" to come on the cheap. Either way, it's good news for the UMPC crowd as it certainly offers greater flexibility. 32GB is, quite simply put, a very tight amount to work within. via akihabaranews

UMPC Sony Vaio P Cloned Again

July 26, 2010 by HS in Tablet with No Comments.

The Sony Vaio P UMPC has certainly been cloned before, and this time a new clone is hitting the US market fresh out of China complete with the same UMPC portability form factor as the original it knocks off. This clone, dubbed the "Sony Style L80" will come with a slightly larger display at 8.9-inches but it is highly unlikely the resolution will come anywhere near the Vaio's 1600x768. It is powered by an Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz processor, has 1GB of ram and 16GB internal storage and costs roughly $299USD. Actually, this sort of thing is a pretty handy alternative for those that want portability but don't want to deal with the underpowered pads that seem to be the only other options at the moment. via clonedinchina

Viliv N5 vs UMID BZ Video Review

July 7, 2010 by HS in Tablet, Video Review with 1 Comment.

UMPCPortal have done a breakdown video review of the much anticipated Viliv N5 which has recently begun shipping, to the UMID BZ. Both are UMPCs and offer you mobile internet access anywhere at a convenient size with extensive functionality. The Viliv N5 has been on the radar of many for a long time and the overall consensus is that the Viliv N5 beats out the UMID BZ in a clear cut victory. What the UMID BZ does do well in, though, is the screen brightness department where it is better for outdoor glare-filled reading. The specs of the Viliv N5 are: Intel Atom Z520 processor, 32GB SSD, 1024MB of RAM, Windows XP Home, Micro SDHC slot, Line-out / Headphone (3.5mm), MIC-in, USB2.0, Mini-USB 2.0 as well as Wifi & Bluetooth. The specs of the UMID BZ are: Intel Atom Z515, 16.1 GB S

XPPhone Video: It’s Massive

June 19, 2010 by HS in Phone, Video with No Comments.

The XPPhone, which many doubted would ever truly materialise, has been videoed at Computex 2010 and is proving to be very intriguing. The folks at UMPCPortal have videoed this phone/MID/UMPC, and as massive as it looks, it also looks to be a device that will reward you should you be able to make good use of it. Besides working telephone features, the XPPhone gives you a fleshed out internet access experience, as well as the ability to run many desktop apps. They also say that the battery life is not dreadful, which is certainly a near-miracle. Watch the video to see it in action - it does look good. via UMPCPortal

Sharp Lynx SH-10B

June 19, 2010 by HS in Tablet with No Comments.

This 5-inch MID/UMPC from Sharp was recently showcased at the Communicasia 2010 fair by NTT DoCoMo. This device packs into it a barrage of goodies, including a 5.2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, and - somewhat disappointingly - Android OS 1.6 (only disappointing because it's not 2.1.) The device is ARM powered, has a trackball and the 5-inch screen sports a resolution of 960x480. It is, though, unlikely that this device will become easily available outside of the Japanese market. It seems that so many cool goodies seem relegated to specific markets. via Ubergizmo
