“There’s Nothing HD About the ZuneHD”

September 28, 2009 by Tom in PMP with No Comments.

In a guest article for Pocketables.net, Ben L. has written how the ZuneHD doesn't quite live up to its "HD" buzz word. The first gripe Ben L. has can be said of a number of 'HD' players, i.e. player itself can't display HD content due to its 480x272 screen which is 14% of the lowest HD standard (720p) and 6% of full HD (1080p). The second big issue Mr L. found with the player is that whilst it can provide HD TV-OUT, it can't do it without the extra expense of a $90 Zune HD AV Dock, rendering you out of pocket and taking away the portable aspect of TV-OUT. September 3, 2009 by Tom in Chuwi, Nationite, PMP Review, Review, Rockchip with 2 Comments.

Having a wealth of video in your pocket for commuting or travel is one thing and we all know today's screens are more than capable of satisfying every time. When you take those videos inside and delve into the world of TV-Out, however, it's another thing altogether. So, here's a handy rundown of the TV-Out quality of different players in our bid to serve you well for an evening in front of the TV. The test begins after the break. Nationite OS-81 The first to be put under the scrutinous eye of the TV test team is the 0S 81. In an age where technology is advancing at a rate of knots, this big player from last year fared well considering. The 640 x 480 standard composite video output was comparable to that of an old Chinese DVD player I own. A cut above VCD quality, the ima

Hello Newman A16HD & Friend

August 27, 2009 by Tom in Newsmy, Player Babed Out, PMP with No Comments.

The latest from Chinese camp Newman/Newsmy is the A16HD, a 16GB HD PMP that offers TV-Out at 1080I/768 decoding and has a slick-looking PSP style interface (pic after the break). For viewing on the go there's the 5 inch, 16 million colour LTPS (low temperature polysilicon display) 800 x 480, 16:9 widescreen display which supports RM, RMVB, AVI, FLV, MP4, VOB, MOV, 3GP, MPG and DAT formats. Audio support comes in the no surprises guise of MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV and APE & FLAC lossless formats, all playable through the onboard speaker. If that's not enough there's also built-in power management, a text reader and a few games to boot. All in all, a pretty impressive looking piece of kit and a slightly cheaper 8GB version is also available. [Via Zol]

Onda VX787 4.3″ Touch Screen Video Review

August 29, 2008 by Raz in Onda, Video Review with 1 Comment.

Overall the player is quite solid, it isn't however, for a touch screen player, in the same league as the S:Flo, its more like an advanced version of the VX777 with a bit better UI. Now the sample we got has the firmware that will most likely be on the first VX787 that go on sale in China. It is stable, but it has many bugs, some noticable during the video review. The audio is good, like that of other rk2706 based player, the ID3 bug that was on the SFLO doesn't seem to be on this player, which is good. There is no coverflow at all, basically only the center image changes, all those albums on the side stay the same. The firmware doesn't support album art right now, but future update will add it. The touch sceeen for the most part can be used with a finger but some options are pretty

RAmos RM970 finally gets TV-Out and a radio

August 14, 2008 by maderin1 in Ramos with No Comments.

The RM970 was the first player on the market, back in Jnurary of 2008 to introduce us to the all new rockchip RK2706 chipset. Since then this players widescreen design has been widely imitated and pretty much stood as a benchmark design for the many players that followed. Now though its time for the player to catch up and RAmos have now boosted this players abilities with a TV OUT function as well as adding a radio that was sadly missing from the original As can be seen the players has been given the "+" sign to tell us this is something different, full details are not yet out but what is know is that it still uses the RK2706 chip as its younger brother does, other basic details are TV-Out FM Radio FM transmitter for listening in cars etc Expect this for sale pretty so

Chuwi T8 Touch Screen player video review – oh Chuwi how you make me sad

August 13, 2008 by Raz in Video Review with 1 Comment.

We recieved a sample of the Chuwi T8 touch screen MP4 Player, overall it has the potential for being a decent player, but it seems Chuwi just stopped short in refining their design and UI, which causes the player to come out as being crude and rough around the edges. Apply the high selling price (even in China) and compare to what you can get for a lower price and which are better (like the Nationite S:Flo), it all makes for little sense in carrying or buying such a player. What a shame, we really hoped that this player would have some potential, hopefully Chuwi will come out with a more refined version of the player. Read our full review and discuss

Onda VX787 4.3″ Touch Screen Announced – First renderings

August 12, 2008 by Raz in Onda, PMP with 1 Comment.

We had this emailed to us by the old Onda factory yesterday, its the first renderings of the Onda VX787, it will have a 4.3" touch screen, TFT screen of 480x272 resolution and 16 million colors, NO WIFI (unlike previously thought), the touch screen is to be capacitive and we speculate will be running on the Ingenics (chinchips) JZ4742 chipset (400mHz MIPS Processor). On a interesting note about the the above picture, it shows that there maybe a coverflow type of operation on this device, coverflow type devices have already started to pop up in CECT phones like the SciPhone, so its not improbable that a more powerful chipset like the JZ4742 and a bigger company like Onda would be capable to implement such a similar thing. The player will be able to player higher res videos at 30fp

Ainol V2000SL – Slim Player with Remote Control and TV Out

July 25, 2008 by Raz in Ainol, PMP with No Comments.

Ainol seems to be hard at work at developing new and more innovative players, unlike other Chinese MP4 makers who are keen on capitalizing on the touch screen trend, Ainol is sticking to traditional push button navigation, but emphasizing on style and functionality. The V2000SL, with the SL standing for Slim, is in fact only 10mm thick, with a sleek alloy back, this design is without a doubt an Apple inspired concept, even the front, we can't really give Ainol any props here. However they do stick with using a 3.0" LTPS screen, which is by far one of the best types of screens that any portable media player could have. Sadly we don't believe that Ainol will be using a WVGA LTPS screen like they are using on their new V3000, but rather they seem to be using their standard TFT LTPS screen,

Gemei X780 images leaked – doubles as brick

July 21, 2008 by Raz in Gemei, PMP with No Comments.

The first real images of the previously unknown X780 have hit the internet. We have little information on this new player, simply because the automated translation of the source article is really bad, its hard to make out what the real specs of the player are - one thing the article does make clear, is that this will be able to play MP3 audio format.....yeah....... Gemei seems to be sticking to their traditional type of design of imitating bricks. The player is hardly the most attractive thing we have seen and resembles a fatter version of the Onda VX757, but it will probably have some good specs, most likely it will have a RK27xx at its core, like most of Gemeis players currently have. This does mean it will have impressive video playback along with quite good audio playback. The bel
