Smart Devices Debuts SmartStation: Docking Station for Tablets

August 5, 2011 by HS in Accessories, Tablet with No Comments.

Smart Devices (the company behind the SmartQ series of tablets, including the much hyped SmartQ Ten) has unveiled their SmartStation, a portable keyboard designed for docking with tablets, and providing a host of functionality including an ethernet port, USB ports and customised shortcuts for Android. It's battery powered too (rechargeable and removable) meaning that you may be able to supply power to your tablet via USB if that is supported... yes, USB. The word "docking" here is used very loosely - the SmartStation isn't so much a dock as it is a tricked out USB keyboard to use with your tablet. Impressive still, but when you hear "dock" you think of something like the LePad. An interesting product but will likely only find niche use. What seems a little odd to me is that there doesn'

SmartQ T10: Cortex-A9-Powered

February 15, 2011 by HS in SmartQ, Tablet with 3 Comments.

Smart Devices certainly haven't given up with their SmartQ line of Android devices, even after the underwhelming N7 and the irrelevant R10. Looks like SmartQ are having another crack at it, but this time with some quite impressive specs. The T10 tablet showcased in these promotional images highlights a Cortex-A9 processor with ARM's Mali-400 GPU on the SoC - we've seen this configuration before, remember? While we're unsure if the T10 will hold an Amlogic chip or not, or how comparable it will be to the similarly-spec'ed Ramos W10 tablet, we do not yet know. What we do know is that the T10 is being touted as SmartQ's flagship model, the tablet to rejuvenate the name, a name that has been wading in its own stagnant pond for a little too long now. We support the move away from the old TCC8

Video: SmartQ N7 In Operation

January 27, 2011 by HS in SmartQ, Tablet, Video with 1 Comment.

Above is the SmartQ N7 tablet in operation taken by the good folks at cn.engadget.com - the tablet is being put through its paces as it were. General performance seems to be slightly underwhelming, with noticeably lag coming in pinch-to-zoom application when viewing an e-book which is dismaying. However, the tablet seems to register 8 points simultaneously on its (apparently) 10-point multitouch screen. The N7 is a 7-inch tablet (1024 x 600) that has an "ARM11 processor clocked at 720MHz" - looks like Smart Devices have had another crack at the Telechips TCC8902 chip, which is capable of 1080p HD video playback (though there are some audio sync issues on past SmartQ devices using the same chip), and runs Android 2.1. 256MB RAM and 2GB internal memory round out the feature set - the table

A Better Look At The SmartQ N7

January 20, 2011 by HS in SmartQ, Tablet with 2 Comments.

We've heard a lot about the N7 before, and now get a more in-depth look at its features and functionality. Though the stylistic borrowing from the Samsung Galaxy Tab cannot be denied, the N7 is shaping up to pack quite the punch, assuming it lives up to expectations, which is something the R10 failed to do. First and foremost is the supposed 10-point multitouch capable display, requiring of course a dedicated controller to map the touches (see image after break) - we're not entirely sold on this yet, but it would be pretty cool if it came to fruition. The 7-inch tab will also come with a 1024x600 resolution on its display, which is pleasing. It is going to run on the Telechips TCC8902 chip, though, as the released specs confirm (ARM11 @ 720MHz), which means support for up to 1080p HD vid

SmartQ N7 Will Have Built-In GPS

January 3, 2011 by HS in SmartQ, Tablet with 1 Comment.

In what is becoming par for the course these days in the Android tablet field, the recently announced SmartQ N7 tablet will be coming with built-in GPS as well, adding to an already fairly full feature list. Despite that, though, the N7 is still not shaping up to be something to get excited about. It is more than likely that SmartQ will continue with their employment of the ARM11-based Telechips TCC890x chipset which, while allowing for 1080p video playback, has fairly shoddy Android 2.1 implementation and can be said as being somewhat outdated in these A8/A9 days. To be sure, custom firmwares released by the community will provide a better experience, as they never fail to with SmartQ products. No specs have been made official yet, but it is known the N7 will be a 7-inch tablet with a

SmartQ N7 Hot On The Heels Of R10 Disappointment

December 24, 2010 by HS in SmartQ, Tablet with 3 Comments.

Smart Devices have announced a new tablet, the SmartQ N7, in hopes to draw attention away from the recent delay of the R10 tablets due to a mass manufacturing defect. The R10 tablets were supposed to hit shelves this month but will be delayed until January, at the very earliest. While not many official specs have been released for the N7 tablet, it is known the N7 will h ave a 7-inch 1024x600 screen. Other than that, not much is known, and we're not entirely sure if SmartQ will be sticking with their Telechips TCC choice, which would be in tradition with all their other MID/tablet units. We hope that they move into the new Cortex A8/A9 craze, simply because while the TCC8902 chips offer good 1080p playback, it often lags behind in Android performance, which is presumably the operating sy

SmartQ R10 Another iPad Lookalike

December 16, 2010 by HS in SmartQ, Tablet with 1 Comment.

We knew when the 9.7-inch SmartQ R10 was first announced that it would be borrowing heavily from the iPad aesthetic, and the image above all but confirms that, essentially being a replica of the iPad shell. Not bad, but is something we've seen all too much lately. The SmartQ R10, by Smart Devices, is another Telechips TCC8902-based tablet with 256MB RAM, meaning it has 1080p video playback capability, but isĀ  (currently) limited to Android 2.1. We say currently because beta firmwares have been floating around for various TCC8902 tablets, including SmartQ's own previous generation SmartQ 7 and SmartQ 5, which allow for FroYo to run on the devices - so don't count a future firmware out. The R10 is a 9.7-inch tablet at 4:3 aspect ratio with a screen resolution of 1024x768. It uses a resi

Smart Devices’ New Tablet: R10

November 30, 2010 by HS in SmartQ, Tablet with 4 Comments.

Smart Devices' new tablet, the SmartQ R10, has apparently been attending the iPad-alike Design School, heavily borrowing from the iPad aesthetic... you might say that they missed the bus, train and plane on this one, though. A little late to the game, Smart Devices' R10 is a 9.7-inch device with a fairly impressive 1024x768 screen resolution. There is some speculation that two screen versions may be released - one capacitive type and once resistive type. If this is indeed so it is a welcome direction for the Chinese tablet market to move into. Other than that, though, we don't have much more information. We're not sure what kind of processor it will use - whether or not it will stick with the current Telechips TCC lineup that Smart Devices has in their SmartQ product line. It appears t

SmartQ V3: An Android-Only Refresh Of The V5?

August 24, 2010 by HS in SmartQ, Tablet with No Comments.

From the exterior to the internals, SmartQ's upcoming MID, the V3, is looking like an exact replica of the V5 model that's been available for a while, only this time it's Android only (as opposed to the Linux/WinCE/Android triple boot). The V3 comes in the same size, 4.3-inch screen with 800x480 resolution, and essentially features identical internals to the V5: 600MHz ARM 11 processor; 256MB DDR2 RAM. The V3 will also have OTG and miniHDMI. Where the V3 drastically differs from the V5, though, is in cost. It's likely to be a sub-USD$100 product, beating out the V5's price by over 50%. via clonedinchina

Smart Devices SmartQ5a MID Upgrades To Android

October 2, 2009 by Tom in Tablet with No Comments.

The SmartQ5 (an MID that got mixed MP4Nation reactions back in April) has been updated to the SmartQ5a and is now an Android-based system. The 4.3 inch MID now comes with Android 1.5 pre-installed and costs $199. [Via Engadget] Discuss on the forum.
