RK2818 W7001 Now With Front Camera

November 5, 2010 by Alex in Rockchip, Tablet with No Comments.

We've seen a similar RK2818 device before - the Window N6 - and we've certainly blogged about it plenty, but what's different about this is one - the W7001 - is the fact that it has a front camera. It may be a small and perhaps insignificant change but a change non-the-less. We can however go into the more significant fact that the Rockchip RK2818 is poised to be flooding the market soon. Rockchip's much-hyped - and somewhat disappointing - flagship, the RK2818 does 720p HD video, runs Google's Android 2.1, and comes with 256MB DDR2 RAM. As we've mentioned in previous blogs, there isn't much difference between Rockchip's previous chip, the RK2808 that only did Android 1.5 and had limited 128MB SDRAM. As for how the RK2818 runs - it runs somewhat disappointingly. We know this

Video: Mystery 5-Inch RK2808 MID w/ 3G

October 14, 2010 by HS in Rockchip, Video with No Comments.

At the Global Sources China Sourcing Fair yesterday, the largest of it's kind in the world, Raz and I stumbled upon some goodies at the Rockchip booth. This here is a mystery, unnamed 5-inch RK2808 device. It's quite thick and sort of lacking in general aesthetic quality, but has a feature set that is quite impressive. It's got a customised UI so that Android (1.5) doesn't display the standard menu, but instead rotates the desktop - with a nice 3D effect - to a different desktop with shortcuts to the various menus you want to access. There is a small dock menu to the left that just has general options - it's difficult to explain in words so watch the video. Also included this device is 3G and a SIM slot. Impressive stuff.

Introducing the Nationite Rocktab – 7″ RK2808 Android Tablet

September 21, 2010 by Raz in Android, Nationite with 3 Comments.

The Nationite Rocktab is our economical Android tablet, that is an all round device that will not put a strain on your pocket book. The Rocktab runs on the Rockchip RK2808 processor and a optimized version of Android 1.5. The 7" screen make the Rocktab ideal for web surfing, ebook reading, picture viewing, video playback and for games. Along with the touch interface is a trackball and accelerometer that can be used for navigation and games. The Nationite Rocktab has a sold build quality that is far better than what most other devices using the RK2808 processor normally have. The sleek Rocktab is only 11mm thick and weighs less than 80g, making it convenient to carry around, light enough to hold when in bed or while sitting on your sofa. Features: Rockchip RK2808 Pr

4-Way MID Browser Speed Showdown

August 12, 2010 by HS in Android with 6 Comments.

Today we tested the speed of page loading on the default Android browser for 4 MIDs on the market today. The Nationite MIDnite stole the show; the familiar APad did better than expected; the VIA-based Eken didn't blow anybody's socks off; and the Telechips-based no-namer poured in disappointing times. Read on for the specs and data and my mild interpretation. The 4 MIDs we tested all sport 7-inch 800x480 resistive touchscreens. One defining difference between them is not their size but their insides, the hardware that makes them tick and tock. The other aspect which makes them distinct from one another is the version of Google's Android OS they use. A clear-cut winner, the MIDnite sports a Texus Instruments OMAP3530 Cortex A8 processor clocked at 800MHz and ran on Android ver

Inle ePad M700 – Just Another RK2808 Android MID

July 29, 2010 by HS in Android, Tablet with No Comments.

The Inle ePad M700 you may have seen floating around the blog/tech sites is just another Rockchip RK2808 generic MID (the one you know as the APad). Though the sites are saying it runs Android OS version 1.6, it likely actually only has 1.5 installed (as we've seen with all other RK2808 generic MIDs). One of the features being boasted is the 720p video playback capability - but that is something to be taken with a grain of salt as 720p video playback is not actually particularly smooth. Other specs include the 2000mAh battery, 7-inch 800x480 resistive touchscreen, 128MB RAM and 2GB of onboard storage. Really, nothing to write home about. When is RK2818 getting in, anyway? via clonedinchina

Yet Another RK2808 Tablet

July 26, 2010 by HS in Tablet with No Comments.

Yet another Android OS 1.5, Rockchip RK2808 powered tablet/MID is hitting the market, this time, though, it's 10-inches large with a screen resolution of 1024x600. The specs are the same as the generic 7-inch versions we are all used to seeing by now: 600 or so MHz RK2808 chip, Google's Android OS version 1.5, 128MB RAM, 4GB of internal storage, WiFi, etc. The RK2808 means that this tablet will be able to "handle" 720p video files, but in our tests done a few months back Raz found the 720p video playback to be less than impressive. All in all, this is just another obsolete RK2808 generic Android tablet. Where in the world is RK2818? Perhaps lunching with Carmen Sandiego, who knows? With the Telechips TCC8902 chip starting to appear, though, the RK2818 had better come soon. via shanz

Bmorn BM999 8.9″ RK2808 Android MID Video review

July 21, 2010 by Raz in Android, Bmorn, Rockchip, Tablet with No Comments.

Thankfully i had some extra time yesterday to get this video review done of the BM999. This MID uses the Rockchip RK2808 SoC and Android 1.5 that has been heavily customized and tweaked to run very nicely on this chip by Rockchip. The large 8.9" screen has a 1028x600 resolution and underneath the screen and circuit board is a massive battery that allows the BM999 to operate for 8hr+ with wifi on. Second part of the video after the break. Discuss on our forums

Bmorn BM999 – The Big Boy RK2808 Android MID – Pictures!

July 20, 2010 by Raz in Android, PMP Review, Rockchip with 2 Comments.

Bmorn were nice enough to send me a pre-mass production unit of their new BM999 MID. The MID is essentially the same, softwarewise as the ifamous apad, it runs on Android 1.5 that has been customized to specifically run on the Rockchip RK2808 SoC. Unlike the aPad, the BM999 MID actually is quite well built and has a large 8.9" 1024x600 resolution screen, which really makes quite a difference in the user experience. As the above image shows, the BM999 really dwarfs the 7" screened aPad, infact the 8.9" screen, of the BM999, is larger than the entire apad. Its not only more bigger, but the BM999 is also heavier, the unit weighs about 600g alone, so its not your light weight player and its certainly something you would need to carry in a backpack. Apart from the large screen and touch

ACorp 4.8-Inch Android MID Video

June 11, 2010 by HS in Android, Tablet with No Comments.

This is the ACorp EM501R - a 4.8-inch Rockchip RK2808 Android 1.5 MID. Coming in a smaller size than other generic Rockchip MIDs we have seen (such as the 7-inch Apad) this is certain to pique the interest of many looking for a smaller and more pocket-sized MID. This MID, going by the video, seems to use the same firmware we've seen on other Rockchip Rk2808 MIDs, so individuation and customisation has not been imprinted (and no word on whether it will or not, but in all honest likely not). Though, either way, the device appears quite snappy and responsive and is another grunt in the growing army of Android-based MIDs that are flooding the market in recent weeks. It's smaller size will certainly be appealing to many, as the 7-inchers we've grown accustomed to seeing are not exactly pocket
