Nook Colour Gets Overclocked To 950MHz And Then Some

January 17, 2011 by Alex in Tablet with No Comments.

The Barnes and Noble Nook Colour has thus far been one of the most tampered with recent Android Tablets. The tamper list includes rooting the Android OS, installing third-party apps, updating the Android OS and installing Ubuntu Linux. We now have another bullet point to add: Overclocked to 950MHz (even to 1GHz, but not ideal) The affordable device is actually simply a colour e-book reader with Android OS that comes as default with a processor clocked 800MHz. With the overclocking in place, the Nook Colour turns into a faster and less power consuming device, which ultimately saves on battery life. Coupled with all the other hacks and you've got yourself quite a decent toy for quite a decent price. The overclocking is done from the device first being rooted, and second by install

The ICOO K12T – But No Jay Chou!?

January 7, 2011 by Alex in ICOO with No Comments.

ICOO, now known by us for their e-book readers, their simple white design and their Jay Chou mascot, have now officially released an e-book reader that fits the first 2/3 of the traditional ICOO e-reader bill. The K12T is an e-book reader with a 4.3-inch touchscreen, and full HD video playback (presumable 720p, as 1080p has not been mentioned). The simple, white design of the K12T has the device looking clean and nice, and the front houses an array of buttons as a secondary operational option, in case you don't want to poke Jay Chou's face - oh wait, he's not in this one. As an e-reader, the K12T supports PDF, EPUB, TXT, CHM, FB2, HTML, PDB, UMD, etc files. As a video player - MKV, MOV, RMVB, RM, AVI, PMP, DAT, FLV, VOB, MP4, MPG, 3GP, etc, which can all be viewed, plus subtitles, via

TMSON K7 – Retro Looking 7-Inch E-Reader

December 31, 2010 by Alex in TMSON with No Comments.

E-readers have now hit the trend of the 7-inch screen, and TMSON's K7 e-boo reader is no exception. This colour screen e-reader supports 720p video playback, which also seems to be a must-have now a days, and is powered by the Rockchip RK2729  processing chip meaning that with high audio quality, 720p might not be totally smooth. The K7's format support includes TXT, PDB, PDF, RTF, HTML and more for its e-book, RM, RMVB, AVI, MOV, WMV and more for video playback on its 1280 x 720 resolution screen, and MP3, WMA, APE, FLAC, WAV and more for audio. It also supports JPEG, BMP, GIF formats for photo viewing. In an attempt to create more control when using and viewing the K7, TMSON has brought back the use of buttons (retro is back, again!) to help navigate through the reader's many functi

The ICOO K17T – Oh Look, There’s Jay Chou Again

December 31, 2010 by Alex in ICOO with No Comments.

ICOO, having already come out with an e-book reader - the K12T of 4.3-inches (that could be the e-book reader we've blogged about before)  have now come out with a new e-book reader by popular demand, and the pulling power of Mr.Chou - the K17T, a 7-inch reader with a resolution of 800 x 480. If the K12T is indeed the e-book reader we blogged about, then it should be powered by SoChip - a strange choice seeing as PDF does not work so well on it. However, it is uncertain as to whether the K17T (and the K12T for that matter) uses a SoChip processing chip. What we do know is that the K17T is a multi-format e-reader with HD video playback. For its e-book format support: PDF, EPUB, TXT, CHM, FB2, HTML, PDB, UMD and others. Video files: MKV, MOV, RMVB, RM, AVI, PMP, DAT, FLV, VOB, MP4, MPG,

ICOO To Enter E-Book Reader Market

December 23, 2010 by HS in ICOO with 2 Comments.

ICOO are to enter the e-reader market with Sochip powered e-book devices utilising E-Ink screen technology. We wonder at the choice of Sochip processor, as what we've seen from current Sochip processors is that they have trouble with some PDF files. Another question that has to be asked: will this be an e-book oriented processor, or will this be one of Sochip's media player processors (eg. SC9800) with its video capability handicapped by the E-Ink screen? Only time will tell, but the e-book reader market in China is certainly increasing. Seeing E-Ink is a slight shock these days as many e-book readers have been released with LCD screens and also do video playback, so this will certainly be a niche product for those who seek nothing more than it offers. via imp3

Archos 70b E-readER ready for Pre-order In Europe

December 23, 2010 by Alex in Archos with No Comments.

That's a fair bit of R's and E's, but anyway, the Archos 70b e-book reader - a 7-inch Android based e-reader that may be an e-reader version of the Archos 70 Android tablet - has now gone on pre-order status throughout Europe, and costs around USD$131. France, being the first of the European countries to receive their 70b's are now enjoying their 7-inch WVGA touchscreen devices that have Wifi connectivity, and possible USB dongle support. They'll also be able to store 4GB's worth of files internally, and up to 16GB externally. The 70b e-reader comes with stereo speakers and allows for video playback and the battery lasts for around 10 hours or reader, 6 of video watching, and 18 of music listening.  What is not guaranteed however, but marked as a possibility is its support for Adobe D

Cube Gets Cute: Same Girl, Same G10, Different Babe-out

December 20, 2010 by Alex in Cube, Player Babed Out with No Comments.

Cube, a modest company with a modest PMP lineup, would therefore use modest models for their babe-outs. Put the Cube cutey next to any of the Teclast's unsubtle and less modest babes, and there are obvious differences in their advertisement methods - one going for the cubie-pie, adorned-in-a-summer-dress-in-the-sunlight approach which would show off the beauty and elegance on their device, whilst the other goes for large, grabbing attention in a more 'robust' manner. We've actually done a babe-out on the Cube device - the G10 e-book reader - and the same babe, but we've now got different pictures - the garden/front of garage door shoot if you will. To refresh you on the G10: It is a 7-inch e-reader that has 1080p video playback that supports a large range of e-book and video formats, i

Onda VK30 – Rounded Corners = Corners Cut?

December 20, 2010 by Alex in Onda with No Comments.

Onda has recently been coming out with some nice, squarish devices. One of which is their Vi30 - an MID that has 1080p video playback. Another, and the subject of this post, is the VK30 - an e-book reader that is the first of the Onda "VK" series line of e-readers. Marketed to bring to its users a more user-friendly operation and interface, as well as a more powerful e-book functionality and experience, the VK30 has an 8-inch, resistive touchscreen with a 4:3 ratio. It also supports a new flash widget for its UI - which may be the reason behind its supposedly user-friendly operating experience. It supports TXT, PDF, HTML as well as other e-book formats. What is curious is that Onda does not specifically state ePub or some other popular e-book formats, which may mean this e-reader is so

Chuwi P500 A 5-inch E-Reader & PMP

December 17, 2010 by HS in Chuwi, PMP with No Comments.

Chuwi have announced a smaller version of the P700 e-book reader, the P500 measuring up at a more portable 5-inches. The P500 is being billed as an e-book reader first, supporting a wide variety of e-book formats including ePub, PDB and PDF, but also handles 1080p video of all the usual formats: AVI, MKV, WMV, VOB, RMVB etc. It adds to a growing lineup of PMPs sharing e-book reader functionality, or vice versa if you prefer. Certainly a step forward, but one wonders if it is coming slightly too late amidst the MID and tablet craze, where devices ranging from smaller than 5-inches to larger than 10-inches are carrying the same kind of functionality by virtue of having access to the internet and running on operating systems that are able to both do media playback and read e-books, such as

Amoi V19: E-Books & 1080P

December 17, 2010 by HS in PMP with No Comments.

It has been a recent trend that e-book readers come with 1080p video playback functionality - something we can't really complain about. The Amoi V19 joins the ranks of the many that have been released (such as Viewsonic's e-book reader or TMSON's 6-incher). The Amoi V19 is a 7-inch e-book reader-first, 1080p capable player-second. It supports a wide variety of e-book formats, such as ePub, PDF, PDB, FB2, UMD etc. and also supports a wide range of video file formats such as MKV, AVI, RMVB, MOV etc. Other specs are as yet unknown, but we're starting to wonder if these e-book reader PMPs are cookie-cutter cut from the same dough, featuring similar variations of internal hardware. In fact, there's little doubt of that, but we're wondering how far the rebranding goes. Either way, a solid choi
