The Archos Gen 8 lineup gets an update to Android 2.2, among other things, with the latest mass-firmware release from Archos. The firmware update brings the Archos 28/32/43/70/101 Internet Tablets to Android 2.2, amidst various other bug fixes (external GPS now works), optimisations (better battery management) and the like:
Higher performance: Just In Time compiler (JIT technology), makes applications run up to 5 times faster than previous 2.1 Eclair (firmware 1.0.84).
Enhanced Microsoft® Exchange support: it is now possible to synchronize contacts and calendar events.
Allow to install more 3rd party applications by installing them on the internal storage memory (for applications that support it).

Sling Media have already launched their SlingPlayer Mobile app that allows you to steam live or recorded TV onto your Android device - we can now safely say that the app works best on a larger screen, or more specifically, on the Archos 101. To remind you of the specs of the device that plays host to the Mobile app - the Archos 101 has a 10-inch capacitive touchscreen and uses a 1GHz OMAP3630 Cortex A8-based processor with Android 2.1, and has HD - apparently prime specs for such an app. Via a Slingbox that is suppose to be hooked onto your home media system, the SlingPlayer Mobile app let's you stream from cable, satellite, IPTV, or broadcast signal, or play recorded shows from TiVo or other supported DVRs. The app also includes virtual on-screen remote control functions, fast forwar
Well, not really disassembled - let's just say partially taken apart. But we do get a good look at some of the internals of the Archos 101 internet tablet, an impressive tablet from Archos featuring an OMAP3630 Cortex A8-based processor clocked at up to 1GHz and Android 2.1 (but a beta 2.2 firmware is already floating around). Impressive stuff and we get a good peak inside the beast, thanks to forum user "mengpo" over at the Archoslounge forums. Images of the innards after the break continue our blogging tradition of posting pictures of cut up players.

In the video above, Charbax of ARMdevices runs us through the recently announced Archos 101 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen Android-powered tablet. What can we say? It looks good. The Archos 101 looks to be competing on the iPad level, managing somehow to weigh 30% less while having 12% more screen surfaced area - an impressive feat indeed. The Archos 101 runs on a 1GHz Cortex ARm8-based CPU, presumably the Texus Instruments OMAP3630 that powers the rest of the newly announced Archos lineup. It's all looking quite impressive, but with a price tag of $299, may be out of reach for some.
