Smartphone Market Shares – Google Takes The Lead With Apple Close Behind! Where Are The Rest?

According to a recent report on smartphones and who holds what within their market share (in the U.S) by market research firm, NPD Group, Inc, it’s all good news for two of the better known names in the industry – Google and Apple. Things aren’t looking so good for the rest however. Statistics from the report shows that Google has increased in market shares by 57.6 percent from their 33 percent of shares in Q2 2010, to 52 percent in Q2 2011. This puts Google at the top of the list, with Apple falling in at second place with their increase from last year’s 22 percent to 29 percent – a 31.8 percent increase in the market share. Click after the break to read about how the other companies did.

RIM, the Ontario-based company that brought us the BlackBerry did not receive as good news as Google and Apple. RIM actually dropped in their U.S market shares from 28 percent to 11 percent – a 60.7 percent drop which must of been the low-blow kick whilst they were already down from nearly losing half their stock value last year. Not all hope is lost for them however as they grasp on to the hopeful introduction of their new operating system into the smartphone market – QNX. It looks like they’re not alone in the bid to turn the corner however – Microsoft’s Windows Mobile also seems to be suffering this year with their drop from 10 percent last year to their now 4 percent, and their successor, Windows Phone 7 holds a mere 1 percent. But what WP7 has up their sleeves is their operating system and hardware refresh – Mango – which seems to have a lot of support from several top third party phone makers.

The last player in line is the recently bought by Google, Motorola Mobility with a total market share drop from 15 to 12 percent, as well as their Android handset market drop from 44 to 22 percent. And so where will they all stand in the future? The question remains on whether RIM will be able to save themselves, drop even further or attach itself to the back of Android or WP7 like a frightened cat. But the two major determining factors would be the success or lack there of of Windows Phone 7′s Mango, and the outcome of the Apple-Android legal battle which will critically sway next years figures for the current two leading companies.
