x86 Windows 7 Tablet Is The N200 From South Holdings
While the name South Holdings won’t mean much to many (it’s likely a manufacturing house), the above tablet (model number N200) piqued our interest because it is not, unlike the dime a dozen tablets you’ll find floating around today, an Android tablet. It’s a Windows 7 tablet, something we don’t see much of, especially coming from manufacturers in China looking to offload designs for OEM. Why? Well because Windows 7 tablets just aren’t that popular. For starters, Windows 7 doesn’t run well on the lowly hardware that these tablets are able to house, though an SSD does mitigate that somewhat. But on the flip side, the x86 hardware required to run Windows 7 just emits too much heat and requires too much cooling to really be a viable option – that, and it’s also heavy and sucks up battery life like no tomorrow (which you should have already guessed by it being hot). With that said, we feel that Windows 7 can really bring a lot more flexibility and functionality to a tablet – especially with gaming potential (think old school RPGs like Fallout 2 or Icewind Dale).
The South Holdings make above features a pretty standard hardware line up for a Windows 7 tablet: Intel Atom N455, 1GB RAM, 16GB SSD, and a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen to top it all off. It sports a large 4400mAh battery, but even with that we’d be surprised to see it get more then 3-4 hours battery life casually web browsing. The N200 also has a rotating camera as well as native support for 3G, which is quite a nice and round feature set. After the break, more images of the tablet as well as its elaborate and really quite pretty cooling vent layout.
30-pin adapter to 3 USB. It’s just too bad that this adapter renders the pre-existing USB slot unusable, assuming all slots on the adapter are used.
A lot of air vents for cooling ventilation and presumably speaker output. Looks quite stylish.
SIM card slot and micro SD slot.
