MWC 2011 – Hands On With The Xperia Play

The guys over at Akihabaranews managed to get hands-on with a pre-released Xperia Play – the lucky sods! Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play is a PlayStation Phone that has a slide-out game pad, turning it onto its side and into a portable gaming device – much like the PSP. With gaming on portable devices on the rise, the Xperia Play is definitely a contender in this street fight of devices. Lets take a look at how it performed. With Android 2.3 Gingerbread being the latest Android version for smartphones (until the 2.4 release of course) and definitely a plus, the hands-on was more focused on the gaming ability than the phone’s other specs – although the OS was said to run very smoothly with no hick-ups. Gaming wise, the Xperia Play comes with a nice set of 50 different games. Unfortunately, some of the games were said to be sub par in quality to other games and some even having an ‘old’ look about them. There was also the issue of some games unexpectedly crashing. So perhaps not the strongest contender, but does the Xperia Play have enough training time to be able to match up to the others when it finally hits the streets? I certainly hope so.
