CEC’s M51 PMP – A David Amongst Myriad Goliaths

With the growing number of tablets comes the growing number of questions raised regarding the whereabouts of new portable media players (we’ve even been asked these questions). The absence of news on PMP’s does not necessarily mean an absence of planning and developing. This is certainly the case for China based company CEC who has recently released their new PMP – the M51 – a small, non OS device that has come into the world full of powerful giants. This 4.3-inch player has a resolution of 480 x 272 and uses a built-SDM chip. It also has CMMB Television support, complete with an antenna – something you don’t see now-a-days (perhaps the device’s sling for taking down the Goliath tablets? I wouldn’t bet on it). Its video file support includes RM / RMVB, AVI, FLV, MPG, VOB and more, its audio files: MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, APE, WAV, and lastly, its image files: JPG, BMP, GIF and more. It also has eBook and txt file support. Whether or not CEC wanted to cut down on costs, the choice of TV-out as opposed to the now common HDMI-out is not a wise one. The player comes with your basic and necessary accessories: power adapter, USB cable charger, video-out cable, earphones, attachable stand, manual and warranty card – all packed into its lucky Chinese New Year style red box. As for the shape of the M51 – no breaking the laws here. You’ve got your standard box shape withslightly more rounded corners than the average and a big white ‘CEC’ logo stamped in the middle bottom. The M51 comes in both black and white versions. So to conclude – can we call this little guy a David amongst the outnumbering Goliath tablets? Given the effort put in in pushing hardware and software to the limit with tablets, the same cannot be said for the M51 – its specs simply aren’t up-to-date or impressive enough. With that said, it is still a new PMP which is a relief to blog about! More images after the break.
