Toshiba’s Honeycomb Tab Out A Bit Early

The folks over at Ubergizmo managed to get their lucky hands on Toshiba’s Android (Honeycomb) tablet a few days before CES 2011 starts and officially showcases the tab. The device is powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, which is what allows for its smooth 1080p HD video playback from file and even YouTube-like websites on its 10.1 multi-touch screen that has a resolution of 1280 x 720. More of the tablet after the break.

As for the tablet’s look and feel, the tablet certainly looks clean, simple, and what one would want with a tablet in these modern days. The back, which has a 5-megapixel camera, also has a rubber cover – which can be removed and customized – and allows for better grip, and will actually hold the device in place when you prop it up – unlike many others that slip ‘n’ slide all over the joint. The front of the device sports a clean, straight-forward design with a 2-megapixel camera on the top, and ‘search’, ‘back’, ‘home’ and ‘menu’ touch-buttons on the side. On the right side of the actual device there’s a dock connector that – speculated by the uberfolks – is possibly for an external light source, keyboard, or even speaker, USB or ethernet. The side also holds the power, volume etc buttons, and there’s the battery. The slate unofficially weighs 1,7lbs (0.77kg) and has the dimension of H10.7 x W6.9 x D0.6 – inches. What capacity battery the tablet will come with is still unknown, but whatever it is, it’s removable!

Unlike the iPad – which it seems to be commonly compared to – the Toshiba Android tab comes with USB connectivity ports more commonly found in China made tablets such as a MiniUSB, MicroSD and USB 2.0 ports. It also has an HDMI outport, bringing you nice 1080p HD video output. The tablet also has WiFi and bluetooh connectivity, and supports GPS with a compass.
Powered by Android Honeycomb, one would hope the tablet comes with access to the Marketplace. This is still not confirmed, but life would just be silly if it didn’t. As well as the hopeful Google Marketplace, Toshiba are also planning on introducing ‘Toshiba Places’ and ‘Toshiba BookPlace eReader’ with the tablet. The ‘Toshiba Places’ is said to feature Android apps that are specifically optimized for the tablet, and e-reader content with great graphics comes courtesy of the Toshiba BookPlace.

With a great, simple design, a large screen, fantastic hardware and software, and good connectivity, this Android tablet certainly fits the bill with what people have been expecting over the trailing end of 2010, and soon to be announced early in this new year (at CES 2011)

Rather nice looking. Hopefully the Android port and support works well as that can be the downside as the Viewsonic G 10″ showed.
Hopefully so! Although it would seem that the Toshiba tablet offers a bit more than covering the lack of Marketplace, Maps etc of the Viewsonic G, with their Toshiba Places and Toshiba BookPlace E-Reader. And it certainly is nice looking! I’m liking the rubberized back!
Since Toshiba does well with Laptops and Netbooks, hopefully they put some good effort with this as it could mean a difference in how future tablets from them are viewed.
