New Cube H500HDS: Boxchip F16 w/ PDF Reading
Cube have released a new player hot on the heels of their recent entries, the H500FHD and the B33HD. This newest model, the H500HDS, is a 1080p capable player that’s being marketed as being affordable more so than brutally powerful (though 1080p is nothing to scoff at). The H500HDS sports a 5-inch screen and is powered by the Boxchip F16 AKA Sochip SC8600. The SC8600 chip originally was only a 768p capable chip but that boundary seems to have been breached as quite a few players have the SC8600 and are able to playback 1080p video. The standard file formats are supported (eg. MKV, AVI, RM/RMVB, MPG, MP4, VOB etc.). The player also has PDF reading capability – something we’ve seen in SC9800 chips but not so much in SC8600 ones, has OTG support and comes in 4GB flavour.

The SoChip Sc8600 was originally capable of 768p, not 720p.
Correct – my mistake!
I just bought this and was disappointed that with such a big screen, the resolution was still only 480×272. I assumed it would have a resolution of 800×480, but it does not. The pixels are very large and noticeable, even when holding the device more than a few feet in front of you.
I also found a strange quirk worth noting with the device, but nothing too bad. There is an on-off switch, but switching it to “on” doesn’t actually turn the device on. You have to press and hold the “play” button for a second and the device will turn on.
Yes the low resolution is disappointing.
Also, the on/off switch probably serves as more of a safety for when you switch the device off, so that it doesn’t turn on in your pocket.
