Nationite MIDNite Xpress Media Player Test 3: Nitrogen

They say variety is the spice of life so without further ado we look at a third choice of media software for the Nationite MIDNite Xpress, the audio-only Nitrogen.
After the exhaustive user options of The Core Pocket Media Player software you’d think it’d be hard to top it but see how the graphically impressive, bold and spacious Nitrogen fares after the jump.

Interface

Of the three programs we’ve trialed so far, Nitrogen wins the beauty contest.
Its large text and icons, intuitive design and smooth ‘push’ scrolling has been expertly crafted to work perfectly with the touchscreen capability with the screen in portrait mode.

Once opened you’re greeted with the main screen which is also the playback screen.

Everything can be found from here and it displays, from top to bottom;
song title, artist, album image, volume controls, music selection menu button, playback controls (repeat, shuffle, sleep timer) progress bar, skip back, play/pause, skip forward, minimize and options.

The progress bar is particularly useful as it allows any point in the track to be selected instantly with no lag or delay.

Playlists are also easy to create and save, allowing for total control of your listening experience.
There is also the option for customized skins.

When selecting music it’s as easy as can be too with the folders displayed in bold clear text and multiple selection available.

Like TCPMP before it, there’s also excellent user customisation available here.
By going to options/setting/equalizer you’re greeted with a 10 band EQ and preamp control.
Every frequency makes a difference allowing for some great tweaking.
There are also 8 very different preloaded presents (bass boost, classical, dance, live, pop, rock, soft and techno) and custom presents can also be saved.

The Verdict

For audio this is possibly the winner of the three we’ve looked at so far.
TCPMP had endless options but the interface, ease of use and quick access to the basic necessities (EQ, playlists etc) lets Nitrogen take the prize.
Graphically it’s excellent with great use of touchscreen and some nice touches such as good resolution displays of album artwork and bold displays of menus, lists and icons.
