Nationite MIDNite Xpress Media Player Test 1: ‘MediaCentre’

MediaCenter is the pre-loaded basic media player on the Nationite MIDNite Xpress MID.
It will be reviewed here and will be followed by a look at another separate media player program, TCPMP, which will also come with the MIDNite Xpress.
See how it performs after the jump.
Interface

Once the program’s been launched from the desktop you’re presented with a nice big, bold and colourful array of icons which display the capabilities of the program, namely Camera, Music, Video, Photo, Ebook, Radio, Record and Setup.
Let’s take a look at each.
Camera
The camera changes the screen to a viewfinder and pictures are taken using a top right shoulder button.
Along the bottom of the screen is the picture quality options which can be changed at a tap from 320 x 240 to 800 x 600 to 1600 x 1200.
Music
This section of the media player is pretty basic through and through.
The display is a simple directional control with two options either side, Shuffle Random, Single Cycle, Contents Cycle and List.

List opens the display for song selection and is navigated via the basic Windows file selection menu style interface.

The sound is basic too with an ok but unrefined basic audio level with no control over sound colouring or EQ.
The only user controlled element is the volume which can be tapped up and down via the graphic display on the bottom right of the main player page.
Video
Files are selected again using the ‘list’ button which takes you to the Windows file folder menu and is simple to use.

As the saying goes, from little acorns, yada yada yada, to cut it short – the playback on the MIDNite Xpress is shockingly awesome.
A simple TV rip AVI file looks fantastic – crisp, clear, bright, no distortion or pixelation, smooth. The Telechips processor really comes into its own.
Playback control is provided easily by the simple bar which is brought up by touching the screen and can be seen below.

A whole host of file types have been tested and they all look super sexy with real depth to the image on both live action and animation. It was a very pleasant surprise all round.
It’s provides everything you could hope for in a PMP, let alone an MID.

Photo
The photo viewer is of typical standard – easy to use and displays bright, crisp images which make this grumpy cat particularly delightful to look at.

The browser is quite nice as allows you to flick through the images and view them as half-screen ‘thumbnails’ before selecting the ones you want to view full screen.

Ebook
This ‘ebook’ reader is just a txt reader. A functional one at that with bright and clear text displayed but nothing to write home about.
The Verdict
As far as bog standard media players go this has pretty unexpected results.
The music playback is as basic as it gets but the video playback is excellent.
To see the video playback in action stay tuned for blog 2 of this review.
