Still relatively in their infancy, the emerging third party applications and games for the OS-72HR are pushing on so here we’ll take a look at what’s on offer so far.
Installation guide, pictorial app run down and all the links after the break.
First things first – for installing you need get the player knowing what you’re up to.
For this you need these files unzipping and the ‘platform’ folder needs to be copied straight to the root directory. Easy.
The applications
It’s recommended a new folder is created on the player’s hard drive for ease of navigation for both the player and you. So in the root folder we’ll need another new folder called “Applications”.
Now that’s done, let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
PDF Reader

This is a hefty file, weighing in at just under 100MB. Once it’s been copied over to the applications folder it can be activated simply by finding it in the browser.
Navigation is easy, the image is crisp and clear and can be viewed horizontally or vertically by some common sense playing with the extensive Chinese menu (look for the 90 for the flip options).
With this the OS-72HR becomes the perfect e-book reader.
The only downside of this application is its presentation of the pdfs in black and white. For most documents and e-books however this isn’t a problem and the image is sharp enough to make up for it.

Text Reader

This is a great improvement on the generic onboard text reader and has a host of options (albeit in Chinese but easily reigned via messing about). The background and text sizes are changeable but the default is easy enough on the eye.

Torch

We’ve all used our cellphone screen as a guiding light from time to time, now you can get a huge 4.3 inches of brightness to find the keyhole or indeed your keys.
No doubt a battery guzzler, this application could prove handy at the most unlikely of times. It really does just do what it says on the tin and gives a strong glowing circle on the screen that can be expanded all the way to full screen to give more light if necessary. At 852kb it’s a handy just in case little app.

Pic Show
This application displays as the player would but allows some superb clarity in its zoom function, as well as some rotation and other fiddling. Unfortunately I’ve not found a way out of it without turning off the machine. The ‘back’ button just zooms out so you’re staring at a tiny picture in a black abyss, rather than the menu you were hoping for.

Games
Bubble Pop

A take (straight forward copy) of Bubble Bobble, the action is remarbly smooth, the graphics are bold, bright and have great definition and it’s as addictive as its ever been.

Goldminers

Another tried and tested game, again as addictive as the day it first appeared. It’s in Chinese but is straightforward, even when purchasing powerups.

Spot The Difference

Another classic, you’re presented with two pictures with some small differences ranging from the glaringly obvious to the hair-pullingly minute. Another fun time killer.
