Blackberry Curve 8520 With Optical Trackpad Targets New Buyers

July 28, 2009 by Tom in Phone with 1 Comment.

Seemingly targeting the casual smartphone user whose interests may have roused by the iPhone hype machine, Blackberry have released details of their latest Curve 8520 which seems geared to first time buyers. Changes include three new multimedia buttons on the top of the phone for music playback control, as well as swapping the old nobbly trackball for optical technology, redesigned for fast scrolling through web pages, emails and documents. Battery life is 4.5 hours of talk time and 17 days of standby but lots less using the GPRS internet. A microSD card slot allows for expandable memory and it comes with a (quite low) 2 megapixel camera with 5x zoom. The display stays the same 320 x 240 TFT LCD with Bluetooth, WiFi and a 3.5mm headphone jack. [Via t3]

New rockchip nano to power MP3 players

July 27, 2009 by maderin1 in Hardware News, Rockchip with No Comments.

Rockchip have made a new baby, imaginatively titled the "nano" !!!, this is basically a chip designed for small MP3 players only, so they must see a market there still. This will go head to head with the current top favorite chip from sigmatel that powers many of the current crop of Chinese (and other) mp3 only players. Any way this chip can boost battery life, play protected content with EEC data protection to apparently reduce memory errors and expand memroy life anyway, pics of a chip (i know you are all excited to see this) Original article Discuss on forums

RAmos T11 Rockhip version

July 27, 2009 by maderin1 in Hardware News, PMP, Ramos, Rockchip with No Comments.

RAmos have decided to make an alternative version of the T11 player using the new 28 rockchip series, this is a change from the current DaVinci chip, one can only think this is a cheaper budget version or that the rockchip is better then the davinci?? we will see when prices appear Basically its the same case and style with the internals changing to the RK2806 rockchip Some notable differences seem to be a sound feedback system replacing the haptic vibration, so basically touch a button and a sound will be made rather than a vibration felt - yet another useless add-on you will turn off almost immediately also the UI looks very familiar, could be a flash UI based on the same system used in the onda vx525 (my speculation based on look and what they say) anyway and image to wet th

The much-praised Nvidia Tegra chip has another official non-Zune home, namely Samsung’s upcoming smartphone due at the end of the year. There are no other details available but the choice of Tegra is a good place to start. [Via Pmptoday]

JVC NX-TC5 iPod Dock Can Go Swivel

July 25, 2009 by Tom in Accessories with No Comments.

In a slight departure from the bog standard, JVC have released their latest iPod dock with the ability to swivel its 4.3 inch screen. Don’t go thinking you’ll be able to watch the videos stored on your iPod though, it’s reserved purely for the built in 1Seg digital TV tuner or WMV stored on a USB. The 15  x 15 watt NX-TC5 also features 512MB of onboard storage for photos, AM/FM tuner and a CD player that rips audio to MD or USB. See Japan and late August for release. It will be around $655. OPPO S39: More tempting screen shots

July 23, 2009 by maderin1 in Hardware News, Oppo, PMP, PMP Review, Review with No Comments.

Well oppo really are keeping us waiting for their new S39 touch screen video player. Its been down at the old firmware developers for a long time now, something we are not used to with Chinese MP4 factories and companies (apart from good old meizu). This player is a 4.3" touch screen player, based on the new Rockchip 28 series with a full on Adobe Flash based user interface and from these pics we can see that they are doing a great job. There seems to be 2 desktops so far, great video listing shot and the music screen look very sleek indeed. Its all about functionality here and oppo are taking time to get it right, but be warned, Oppo are not low end media player, they are designed for the more affluent Chinese client and as such will demand a higher price tag than the normal Chinese

FINIS SwiMP3v2 Waterproof MP3 Player

July 23, 2009 by Tom in PMP with No Comments.

Swimmers rejoice – the FINIS waterproof MP3 player is out and making a splash (sorry). The stereo earphones attach to your goggles and work via bone conduction, rather than opting for the standard in-ear affair. Large pads flap over your temples to avoid your ears being too occupied, instead letting them do their job of balance and listening for safety announcements/boats while you dig your tunes. The onboard memory is 256MB which allows for around 60 songs. By today’s PMP standards that’s small fry but really anyone who thinks they’ll swim for 16GBs worth of music is either insane or piscine. The SwiMP3 costs around £90. [Via Pocket-Lint]
